DUARTE Resident

Dear City Council:

As a concerned Duarte resident, I am writing this letter to express my support for smoke-free housing policies in my community. Secondhand smoke can affect Duarte residents living in multi-unit complexes from [neighboring units, common areas, shared ventilation systems, and balconies/patios]. As you may be aware, the Surgeon General has declared that secondhand smoke is a proven air toxin and there is no safe level of secondhand smoke. Furthermore, ventilation systems and most air filters will not protect children and adults from secondhand smoke. Eliminating indoor smoking is the only way to fully protect nonsmokers from the harmful effects.

I would like to request that you consider a no-smoking ordinance for multi-unit complexes in Duarte. A no-smoking rule is entirely legal and would greatly improve the health and well-being of public housing residents.  In LA County, sixteen out of eighty-eight cities have already implemented local smoke-free policies.
